I'm looking to be in the market for an IPod or some other such monstrosity...and suggestions/recommendations as to brand/type, etc.?

An iPod nano should do the trick.
Sony Boombox with detachable speakers and double cassette deck.
my suggetion: ipod nano ... that's what i have, with 4 gigs of storage space ... i LOVE it
i suggest the zen creative. same price and same storage as the ipod, but you have a built-in microphone for recording audiofiles and personal notes; you get the built-in fm tuner; you get a line-in jack to go straight from any sound source into mp3; and, you use one AAA battery, which lasts 18 hours (that way, you don't have to worry about a charger or a computer).
